This platform is dedicated to building a research and teaching resource that investigates the complex dilemmas posed by air pollution and its profound impacts on health and global climate. For instance, recent research by Giampiccolo et al. (2024) in Environment International highlights a compelling injury: increased breast cancer risk linked to exposure to multiple air pollutants like NO2, PM2.5, PM10, and PCB153. (Giampiccolo et al. 2024 Multi-pollutant Exposure Profiles Associated with Breast Cancer Risk: A Bayesian Profile Regression Analysis in the French E3N Cohort. Environment International, vol. 190, p. 108943, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envint.2024.108943) Such findings underscore the scientific uncertainty surrounding the long-term safety of these pervasive environmental contaminants. We propose harnessing this critical data as a foundational knowledge base for an epistemic community of high school students and teaching staff, empowering them to collaboratively develop strategies for pollution avoidance. This strategy-building process intrinsically supports hands-on learning across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, transforming complex environmental challenges into tangible educational opportunities. By applying the principles of modern science - from discerning biochemical pathways in biology, to analyzing chemical reactions in air, and measuring physical properties of particles - this collective will forge actionable knowledge, embodying how scientific inquiry lights the path toward a healthier, more sustainable future. Beyond these direct health impacts, our investigations extend to Global Warming, an existential crisis demanding urgent action. Alarm bells ring clearly, as documented by the EU Copernicus Climate Change Service staff: ‘The global-average temperature for the 12 months (November 2023 - October 2024) was 0.74°C above the 1991-2020 average, and an estimated 1.62°C above the 1850 - 1900 pre-industrial average.’ Such escalating temperatures highlight the profound urgency of addressing human impact on Earth’s systems.

To foster this vital knowledge archive, we operate through dedicated hosting sites including EnvironmentalJusticeMatters.org (EJM) and UnThinkableIdeas.org (under-construction). Our brand is built around a singular core issue: the inherent danger posed by air pollution exposure- a danger to Public Health, the well-being of Flora and Fauna, and the stability of the Climate itself. We formalized our commitment by trademarking ‘Climate Protection Fund’ and establishing it as a NYS not-for-profit corporation, Climate Protection Fund Inc. (Federal Unique Entity ID: YKQUK1UC1JQ3). We have also secured the domains CPFund.info and ClimateProtectionFund.eu. Previously, the development of these domains was restricted pending a future NSF Proposal; however, with the recent shifts in the 2025 political landscape, notably the ‘radical shake-up’ at NSF (Science, AAAS, 20250508: https://www.science.org/content/article/exclusive-nsf-faces-radical-shake-officials-abolish-its-37-divisions), we recognize the imperative to build and expand our presence now. Our choice of the ‘.eu’ domain reflects the European Union’s Precautionary Principle, a foundational concept for our interventions: prevention of injury. We encourage consideration of this principle (http://bit.ly/PrecautionaryP) in conjunction with critical health trends, such as the rising incidence of Breast Cancer. Our overarching focus is on developing preventive strategies for protecting health, driving our investigations and promoting discussions on avoiding pollution exposure.

Environmental Justice Matters (EJM) stands as a key project of the Climate Protection Fund Inc. Our inaugural public engagement is the Environmental Justice Matters Workshop, part of the ReImagining Education Conference hosted by The Gordon Institute for Advanced Study at Teachers College, Columbia University, on July 15, 2025. Prevention Research: And Collaborations with Artificial Intelligence (AI)

This Course treats AI as a research collaborator, curator and intellectual sparring partner. I use Kimi, a large language model developed by Moonshot AI (月之暗面), a Beijing-based startup founded by Yang Zhilin. Kimi operates in the Chinese AI landscape alongside labs such as DeepSeek, and its development reflects important trends in the field - including the shift toward open-weight models, where trained model weights are publicly released for download, self-hosting, and fine-tuning. This is distinct from “open source,” which would include training data and full codebase.

What this means practically: You can interact with Kimi via web interface or API to assist with literature reviews, code troubleshooting, data interpretation, and writing feedback. I use Kimi regularly in my own research - for example, in formatting academic manuscripts using org-mode in Emacs running in iTerm - and I encourage you to develop your own collaborative workflows. I got Kimi from the Android App Store.

A research context: I am currently working with Kimi to review my paper on Asthma Hospitalization Disparities and COVID-19 Risk along the East 96th Street Border in Manhattan. This Course can play a role in that investigation, in part, as a collaborative ideas lab where your work can inform investigations. I very much hope you share investigations you would like to pursue. The Lancet article speculated on the outcomes of 1,400,000 Excess Tuberculosis Episodes and 537,700 Excess Deaths by 2035.

  • Poverty and No Access to Prevention. The withdrawal of funding is more than a budgetary shift; it is an assault on the inherent dignity of those assailed by Poverty and denied access to Prevention. To frame USAID as a ‘gift’ is to ignore the ethical directions of the Right to Health. When we allow the World’s leading killer to resurge through systemic abandonment, we are participating in structural violence that disproportionately targets the bodies of poor and marginalized communities - be it in the highly-burdened regions of Africa or the historically neglected, asset-starved neighborhoods of Harlem and the South Bronx. To be free from disease is not a luxury; it is a Human Right vested in the very essence of personhood.

    • I chose to place `ethical directions’ in the above paragraph to set up a tension. I want the withdrawal of USAID funding to appear suspect. Is it an ethical direction? I wish to raise scrutiny of the withdrawal of funding such that the withdrawal raises an alarm that is searching for a justification.

  • Ethical Directions: Raising queries about the ethical directions seems relevant in light of the abduction of President Nicholas Maduro, Venezuela, by President Trump’s USA. The Financial Times 20260104 has reported that it labels the abduction as cavalier' and of a self-interested nature’. The focus of the abduction is access to Venezuela’s Oil Reserves for USA Oil Companies. As of January 2026, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) and its independent experts have taken a stance against the USA military intervention. Their opposition provides the `alarm’ I am looking for.

    • The Official Condemnation: On January 7, 2026, UN experts issued a formal statement calling the US bombardment and abduction of President Maduro a `grave, manifest and deliberate violation of the most fundamental principles of international law.’

    • Article 2(4) of the UN Charter: OHCHR+ has explicitly cited this article, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. Hell Spells, President Trump's USA has birthed a disaster. No way can the story of run’ [ning] Venezuela hold.     • President Trump and Co Blustering Onwards, the Venezuela Cornua Copiæ staying alive. It is a by the skin of our teeth, #SkinOfOurTeeth, narrative. Is the arrival of President Trump an excellent opportunity to challenge Corrupt Capitalism? Yes. Framing the withdrawal of USAID and the run' [ning] of Venezuela as two sides of the same coin helps us along the road of education. On the 3rd of Jan. 2026, President Trump ordered the kidnapping, abduction of President Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela, to face a trial in the USA on drug trafficking charges. President Trump vowed that the USA would run’ Venezuela for years to come.

    • My thoughts went to no USA troops on the ground, no occupying force. This scenario makes it uncertain how President Trump’s `run’ [ing] would happen. President Trump has said he wants to govern the country through the threat of military action. It appears that President Trump wants near-personal control of Venezuela’s Oil. Think about it, the World’s largest proven oil reserves under the control of President Trump, USA. My wish: we navigate gracefully through it all. Seizing Oil to make money for Venezuela and the USA, as President Trump stated at Mar-a-lago, the 3rd of January 2026, is the definition of the State Entity(USA) merging with an Oil Corporation(Chevron) interests. Concepts of Public Health, Prevention have not got a chance in this entanglement. I can see a #DeadlyEquation operating: Chevron vs. Tuberculosis Prevention Funding.

    • This is an Antonio Gramsci nightmare: President Trump’s USA has abandoned a role in providing ethical leadershipI suspect this is another event when President Trump and Co’s USA stops trying to protect the bodies of people of color in NYC and Globally, and starts treating them as disposable byproducts of a cavalier' pursuit of Oil resources. The Trap’ Mr Rhodes describes is not just a geopolitical one; I would try to argue it is an unethical direction where the Right to Health is erased by the Will to control Oil seen as Power and Riches. My thoughts further went to the USA in Vietnam; did the USA Leaders foresee a land war? No, they did not. Just as the USA military complex failed to calculate the lives and social cost of a Vienam land war, the current Oil Company Connection fails to calculate the biological rebound-ing of drug-resistant Tuberculosis to a range of interconnected global locations, e.g., NYC. Continuing the primacy of the Cognitive Blind Spots Analysis: President Trump rises during a crisis of authority to stabilize' the state through force, such as the uncloaked operation of super-power will in Venezuela, while simultaneously dismantling the _ethical direction_ of USAID funding. By reducing Tuberculosis Prevention, President Trump's USA degrades a _Right to Health’_. Health is essential for People to act as Political, Cultural Architects. There is an uplifting counter-narrative. Black History provides modelling for taking agency and building ourselves as novel, non-obvious vehicles into the future. Formation of Epistemic Communities must reclaim the Right to Health as a tool of self-determination. A proposed first step is building Epistemic communities.       • The Diagnostic Underground: As funding for formal “Chest Centers” is consolidated, the #SurvivorPath manifests in mutual aid networks and community-led screening. Excellent foundations for building Epistemic Communities. This is a Counter-Narrative where agency is reclaimed from a State that views marginalized bodies as disposable byproducts.
      • The Alarm: Using the Principle of Non-Retrogression is a key tool for this #SurvivorPath. It provides the legal vocabulary for the survivors to hold the state accountable for its unethical directions.

  • The Gramsci nightmare has multiple corners. The expression of President Trump’s uncloaked will for Oil in Venezuela is accompanied by a Tuberculosis resurfacing in the resource-starved neighborhoods of NYC. As of January 2026, NYC’s Tuberculosis rate has surged by 28 percent, a consequence of the unEthical Direction that dismantled USAID. By reclaiming an Ethical Direction of Health, the folks of color in NYC and the global South are doing more than surviving a surge in Tuberculosis; they are building novel, non-obvious vehicles of a future where dignity cannot be run' for profit. This is a _build it_: the creation of _Epistemic Communities_ that the Will for Power’ cannot contain. The Epistemic Communities have to focus on building Evidence to address the rising incidence of Tuberculosis. The path forward includes the wearing of and promoting face masks.   • Overview:

  • In Fall 2026, the course, Prevention Research, moves beyond traditional public health metrics to confront what I term the Cognitive Blind Spots' of President Trump's USA. Following the 2025 withdrawal of USAID Funding and the simultaneous cavalier’ pursuit of Global Oil Assets, we are witnessing a manufactured resurgence of Tuberculosis (SNOMED CT 56717001). Tuberculosis needs to become a Syllabus Sub-Section Project - #SurvivorStories: an ethical response to the increasing incidence of Tuberculosis USA. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, USA at a Davos Dinner 20260120, reinforced the pursuit of Fossil Fuels. He reasoned the World should focus on Coal as an energy source rather than Renewables. This position reflects a cultural, political and social outlook that the Science of Global Warming is bogus. This is distant from working as a collaborative collective with shared Science Knowledge. In trying to develop a timeline for the growth of the Coal Analysis on the Science, this has to be a marker event: in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, 23 September, 2025, President Trump described Climate Change as the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world'. The two images of the collectors of plastic in Harlem reveal capitalism’s dirty secret: environmental cleanup depends on labor exploitation. These collectors are the organic intellectuals of our waste crisis - their daily practice exposes the lie of the “circular economy.”

The prevailing hegemony frames recycling as consumer morality. But this masks a brutal reality: the $0.05 deposit is exploited piece-rate labor that forces marginalized communities to perform municipal waste management without the protections of formal employment.

To earn poverty wages, collectors must process 300 containers hourly - backbreaking work that benefits corporations and municipalities while keeping workers trapped in precarity. This is Environmental Racism as a business model: concentrate pollution and poverty in communities like Harlem, then profit from their labor and Health Disparities limiting competitiveness of the workers.

The collector embodies passive revolution - their work sustains the system while preventing their liberation. They clean the streets that segregation dirtied, earning pennies while beverage companies pocket millions.

We must reject this Environmental Feudalism. A just transition requires:

  • Recognizing waste collection as essential work.
  • Providing living wages and benefits for all collectors.
  • Creating worker cooperatives owned by the collectors.
  • Integrate Health Justice into Economic Reform:
    1. Map collector concentrations against Health Disparity Zones as defined by, e.g., https://bit.ly/Borders_96th.
    2. Quantify how poor health (Health Disparities) affects earning capacity in informal work.
    3. Use Health Data to demand municipal responsibility for collector well-being.

The fight for Environmental Justice begins when we see these workers not as marginal figures, but as the foundation on which the recycling myth depends. Their labor powers the system; their liberation will transform it.

The revolutionary task is clear: we must transform the collectors from exploited casualties of the Environmental Crisis into organized architects of Ecological Justice.

My process for analyzing the failed INC-5.2 (Geneva Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC)) is the visible outcome of no design and build plan for plastics recycling pathways to ensure a circular flow. Formation of a strong Plastics Treaty is a direct threat to the future profits of ExxonMobil, Shell, and their peers. This is the material interest that underpins the PetroDollar culture, political, science struggle, and the appearance at INC-52.

20250818: Thinking About The Plastics,

First, we face a Climate Crisis, and the dangers are exacerbated by Air Pollution from the use of fossil fuels, such as Oil. The efforts to address this calamity include The Geneva Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC) negotiations, which ran from the 5th to the 15th of August 2025, under the auspices of the UN Environment Programme. The negotiations did not produce a Treaty on global plastics pollution after President Trump’s USA opted to join the PetroStates to block action. The not-happening goal was to create what is known as the Global Plastics Treaty. The meeting was a numbered session, “INC-5.2”. My suspicion was that Petrochemical Lobbyists would pitch against any curtailing of plastic production. Groups like the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) have tracked the presence of Petrochemical Lobbyists. Is it an occupation of the negotiating space to scupper any planning for, e.g., recycling. A rational analysis is yes, it is. Again, a response comes to mind: Why can’t the like-minded majority conclude a Treaty and progress without the Saudis ++ and President Trump’s USA? The way forward is not waiting for President Trump’s USA to join the future paths. The way forward is the formation of a Treaty on global plastic pollution, but for it to be effective, requires the participation of the World’s largest producers and consumers. A Treaty without the USA and major oil-producing nations risks being toothless, creating a parallel system where polluters can continue to operate with impunity, undermining the efforts of the willing majority. The failure in Geneva was not a simple diplomatic impasse; it was a calculated political victory for a fossil fuel industry that sees plastic as its essential ‘Plan B’ in an era of Energy Transition. This context explains the Lobbyist presence and their refusal to accept anything but voluntary measures.

  • The Distillation of Oil includes yields of Petrol and Naphtha. Naphtha contains many hydrocarbons, including Ethane and Propene. These compounds contribute to the formation of commonly produced plastics known on Earth. The future is ReDesign using Renewable Energy, ending Petrol production, and recycling Plastic. The recycling process has to include designing biodegradable plastics and reducing/ending the addition of PFAS. One of the ways forward is designing plastic from polymers that can be broken down efficiently by microbes in water and soil. It is a beautiful way forward, creating new learning and design spaces. It is further a direct threat to the business model of the petrochemical giants who profit from virgin plastic production. Achieving this future will require more than just technical innovation; it demands a political struggle to create the conditions - through binding regulation and public investment - where a circular, non-toxic economy can triumph over the linear, toxic model of the fossil fuel age.

20250802: More Than Carbon, How Gutting the EPA’s Climate Rule Unleashes a Chemical Threat. … under-Construction, will be updated,

  • On the 29th of July 2025, the Trump Admin’s EPA disclosed the beginning of a revocation of a key scientific finding, called the Endangerment Finding. The Endangerment Finding analysis was published in 2009; it functions as a core threshold, a prerequisite for regulating six Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from cars and car engines, and has been interpreted as applying to airplanes. The Finding identifies six GHG emissions as posing a danger to Public Health because they cause Global Warming. Section 202(a) of the Clean Air Act discloses the “mix of six long-lived and directly-emitted greenhouse gases[:] carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)”. Buried in the 2009 Finding, among the familiar greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane, is a name that should instigate attempts to reduce exposure and do detective work: perfluorocarbons (PFCs) - the original forever chemicals. This listing took my thoughts to the Public Health dangers presented by PFCs and PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), which are essentially the same thing. PFAS being the current term for this group of synthetic chemicals. PFAS exposure can lead to a range of health injuries, including Liver Damage, Thyroid Disease, Obesity, Fertility Problems, and an increased risk of certain cancers, particularly Kidney and Testicular Cancer. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin cast the scene differently on the Ruthless Podcast. At present, my research has not pulled up an EPA document. This is a scene far away from what I have composed. Are there paths to reach Administrator Zeldin’s outcomes and protection of Climate, Environment, Public Health and Science? Sure is, a fundamental shift to Renewable Energy. That fundamental shift is ongoing, the resisters are busy producing the consequences of PFAS contamination, e.g., the Sacrifice Zones, poisoning the land, water and human bodies of disproportionately Black, Brown, Indigenous, and low-income communities from the Asthma Hospitalizations, Mott Haven, South Bronx to the industrial corridor of Louisiana’s `Cancer Alley’.

For me (KM), the Endangerment Finding has resonance with the EU Precautionary Principle’s prevention of injury. I think it is in the space of taking avoidance actions based on Suggestive and unCertain Evidence of danger to Health. The fight for the Endangerment Finding and the fight of communities against PFAS contamination are two fronts in the same war against a system that places corporate profit above the sanctity of the Environment and the Human body. A way forward is the formation of Epistemic Communities. Here is a statement provided to the study conducted by Menegatto and Zamperini 2024, p. 16 of 25 (https://www.mdpi.com/2076-0760/13/10/509) that describes the formation: `I believe we have become great experts in PFAS. We address topics ranging from contaminated food to limits on water, from the development of the contaminated Miteni site to the European Drinking Water Directive, and the consequences for human health. The reality is easy to observe if you know where to look: the EPA’s independent research arm - the Office of Research and Development (ORD) - is being systematically hollowed out. According to a recent report in The New York Times, a plan is being drafted within the EPA to dismantle the very foundation of climate action: the scientific finding that greenhouse gases pose a threat to the climate, a threat to human life. Supporting the unions like AFGE that represent these besieged EPA employees is no longer just a labor issue - it is a front-line in the struggle for a habitable planet.

20250628: The Anti-Science Moves: Recasting ACIP (The Vaccine Advisory Panel)

Why do we assert that Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and his associates are not allies of Immunization Practices? The evidence is stark: in June 2025, RFK Jr. and his team dismissed all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), replacing them with 8 new appointees. The full listing of new members is available here: https://x.com/SecKennedy/status/1932899858920120692. A review reveals a significant departure from long-standing expertise in vaccine research. In their inaugural meeting, this reconfigured ACIP immediately pushed for a comprehensive review of the entire childhood vaccination schedule, a re-evaluation of Hepatitis B vaccinations, and notably, walked back previous recommendations for flu vaccinations containing thimerosal. It is deeply concerning that some of these new appointees have publicly voiced skepticism about vaccinations and appear ill-equipped to navigate evidence-based analysis. This move, we contend, is undermining a scientific process; RFK Jr. is a skeptic challenging the gatekeepers he should not be HHS. He is a vital sideline voice. If the line drawing is wrong he is a voice to call it out. The gatekeepers don’t do that. Us too, are skeptics on the role of the gatekeepers.

A striking example of this shift away from evidence based analysis was the RFK gang vote to remove thimerosal from flu vaccines, following a single presentation by an individual who introduced themselves as a “private citizen”. We wish we could have been there. A majority went for thimerosal-free single-dose formulations.
